I didn't know what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. From the detailed art work in the murals to learning how they weave everything together year after year. Well worth stopping in Mitchell to visit the Corn Palace.
I've known of the Corn Palace since I was a child but never had the opportunity to visit until now. This is one of those places you just have to see and admire, even if for only a few minutes. Steeped in history, they've recently undergone a series of significant improvements to the building which makes it more appealing while retaining the elements which made them famous. They are open to the public; inside they offer a wealth of history about the palace as well as the local area. Across the street there are a few shops to satisfy your coffee, ice cream and other cravings.
It's a multi use facility in the heart of town, think the local auditorium. What makes it worth the trip is the exterior is decorated with murals made of corn. If you wonder if it's worth it, it is. The look of the place and better yet the history of it makes it a worthy stop if only to be able to say you've been there. Inside the walls are lined with photos of the facility over the years and a quick trip upstairs gives you even more to view. Don't go with expectations of the Great Pyramids. It's not that kind of place. You will, however, enjoy it if you go to see something fun and unusual.

If you’re going to see one thing in Mitchell, SD, let it be the corn palace. A very cool slice of history that was totally worth the stop. It’s primarily used as a sporting/concert venue today, but it has some fun corn-themed exhibits inside and the exterior is very impressive. If you’re passing through Mitchell, stop here, take some photos and stop at the gift shop. There is 100% someone in your life who needs to receive a corn palace postcard.
